Taking a Look at Basketball - 1299 Words

Basketball is a sport played worldwide of people of all ages. The game was originally invented by James Naismith, a physical education teacher of what is now known as Springfield College. The game was first created to occupy athletes at a small Northeast school. Now it is played all around the world. In this essay, the history, equipment, leaders, and rules of the game will be explained. When basketball was invented, James Naismith’s boss was Mr. Luther Gulick, chairman of the physical education department at the school for Christian workers (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, instructed James to invent a new game to entertain the school’s athletes during the winter. He then found a peach basket and nailed it 10 feet above the gym doors onto a wooden track. Originally played with a soccer ball, Tony Hickle in the 1950’s searched for a ball that would be more visible to the players and spectators. In the 1920’s dribbling was introduced to make it easier for the player with possession of the ball to move around to either shoot or pass the ball. Basketball became a national sport that was played in colleges and in the NBA, which formed on August 3rd, 1949. Relativity Essay - 1956 Words

Relativity is a theory in physics that can be basically implies that space and time are one in the same. This is absolutely counterintuitive to classical physics which has the two as completely different entities. Relativity can be separated into two basic concepts: Special and General Relativity. Within Relativity the fundamental concept above all else is that space and time are intertwined with each other in the universe as a fabric called space-time. Simply put, Special Relativity deals with the laws of Physics when observers are all moving uniformly relative to each other while General Relativity expands on the idea to include gravitation and acceleration. (Lieber, Lillian R. The Einstein Theory of Relativity. Philadelphia: Paul Dry,†¦show more content†¦However this is not the same for the beam of light fired from the laser pointer. This is because light is an electromagnetic wave that is independent of the motion of its starting point. It will always travel at 299,792, 458 m/s because light’s speed only depends on the medium through which it travels and the motion of the object it is created from is completely irrelevant. (Lieber, Lillian R. The Einstein Theory of Relativity. Philadelphia: Paul Dry, 2008. Print. p. 4-37)( Einstein, Albert, and Robert W. Lawson. Relativity; the Special and General Theory,. New York: H. Holt and, 1920. 21-25. Print.) This postulate developed by Einstein has what some would call key problems and would cause uproar in conventional thinking. Things such as time now become variables when original thinking classified it as an unchanging constant. Just thinking about this prospect can be mind boggling. Time is something that everyone takes for granted as being a constant flow, just ticking away, and perpetual. But, in fact, it is something that depends entirely on space-time. How do we know that time is relative? Imagine a different kind of clock. This clock is unique because instead of a hand ticking away it is actually a beam of light bouncing between two mirrors. This would seem the most logical choice of an accurate clock because light is a constant right? As we observe the clock it ticks off at regularShow MoreRelatedLinguistic Relativity Essay1508 Words   |  7 PagesIntroduction: Linguistic relativity is the notion that language can affect our thought processes, and is often referred to as the ‘Sapir-Whorf hypothesis’, after the two linguists who brought the idea into the spotlight. Lost in thought, he began wondering what it would be like to drop a ball while falling off the side of a building (James Overdunn, Stanford Edu) Granting all this, he realized that the person who was falling would not be able to detect the effect of gravity on the ball whereas an observer could. Hence, he figured out the principle of Equivalence, that gravity pullingRead MoreThe Theory Of General Relativity2556 Words   |  11 PagesTheory of General Relativity is the renowned work of Albert Einstein and represents the current understanding of gravity. According to the Theory of General Relativity, space and time are unified as spacetime and mass and energy are interchangeable. The Birth of P-Funk George Clinton - 842 Words

In ancient African civilizations music took precedence in all activities that the tribes participated in. There was a song for every celebration, every birth, and every death. As Africans were enslaved and moved to North America by Europeans, many customs and traditions followed with them. Lighthouse free essay sample

Mr. F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, â€Å"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.† A quote which depicted my life perfectly. The choppy current of my mind constantly dragging me back into past mistakes and tragedies that prevented me from achieving my goals. I had no escape from the negative thoughts that lurked in the darkest corners of my head and caused me to fall into a place I never want to go back to. For a long time, I used to paint pictures on my thighs and wrists. Red lines that crossed every which way, ones that were deep and crimson and others that were a light rose petal red. My paintbrush was a razor, a piece of treasure that hid under my bed or at the bottom of my backpack. Each stroke told a different story, stories that I couldn’t talk about, stories that caused me pain, stories that I couldn’t put into words. Eventually my mom noticed my off-kilter behavior and I was thrown into an agonizing hell consisting of counselors, diagnoses for depression, anxiety, PTSD, BDD, trichotillomania and lists of other problems I hadn’t heard of. Within a couple of months I became a stranger to my friends and a misunderstood freak to my family. I felt like a prisoner in my own body, screaming for someone to let me out, but I was the only one with the key. Things began to worsen and suicide was a pending thought, always running on the high-speed treadmill of my brain. It was a frosty winter night when I decided my life had no value. I planned a day when I’d erase myself off the earth. That was until I stumbled across a poetry blog and began to scratch my own rhythmic lines on paper, rather than my wrists. Each poem I wrote released emotions that were lodged into my head like bullets and brought relief that lasted longer than any razor’s saving grace. The poems I created made me feel useful and I realized my opinions mattered and I mattered. I started publishing poems on poetry websites where I was drenched with love and support from complete strangers. For once in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere and eventually this led me to helping three other kids rekindle the non-existent school newspaper. I now w rite articles for my school and I feel incredibly accomplished every time my pieces get printed because I know I can influence people with what I have to say. â€Å"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.† A quote that so many people who are struggling in life can relate to. A quote that gives me a desire be a lighthouse for society that can move lost boats, to calmer seas with my words.
